Fly-Fishing
My
Ikigai
Fly fishing isn’t just a hobby for me, it’s my ikigai (生き甲斐), my reason for being. While the term is often translated as “sense of purpose” or “reason for existence,” its true meaning runs deeper. In Japanese culture, ikigai is about the fulfillment and joy that comes from dedicating yourself to something you love, mastering it, and taking pride in your craft. For me, the greatest joy isn’t even in catching fish, it’s in sharing the passion. Teaching others, explaining how fly fishing works, and seeing that spark of curiosity light up in someone’s eyes is what truly fulfills me. There’s something magical about introducing someone to the water, showing them how it all comes together, and watching their amazement unfold.
That’s my ikigai not just fly fishing, but passing it on.
